10x12 Gable Shed — Gibson St · July 2026; Oct 2026 roof revision (asphalt roof, cap stapler, coil roofing nailer, wall felt; roof items come from Lowe’s order #300901273261392512, Sep 30). Updated Oct 1, 2026. Roof plan: Roof_Phase_Order.html §0. Companion to the Gun Map in Shed_Build_Guide.html and Step 0 of Shed_Orders.html. The fine detail: which gun, which nail, where — and the mistakes that don't announce themselves until years later. Reconciled 7/27 sheet-goods rows updated from the pre-catalog "wire coils / siding gun" plan to the as-decided PFR2190 stick-nail assignment.

Wall_Framing.html, "Windows and weather — the rough openings". (Sill/pan design still open.)Compressor rule of thumb: 6-gal pancake ≥2.5 SCFM @ 90 PSI runs any single nailer on this project, including the framer — one operator = one gun at a time.

Keyed by the fastener you actually buy — phase, quantity (approx build count — box sizes vary), and status each in their own column; the "why" and the crosswalk from the plans' spec are in the Notes column and the Rules below. Guns: PFR2190 = 21° framing; PFN1564 = 15ga stainless finish; PBR32Q = 18ga brad; Freeman G2CN45 = coil roofing nailer (roof + wall shingles); Stinger CH38-2 = cap stapler. Status values like "buy w/ Order 2/3" refer to the old order plan; roof items are on the Sep 30 Lowe’s order #300901273261392512. Restructured 7/29 — keyed by fastener type
| Fastener (buy this) | Gun / method | Where used | Phase(s) | Qty (approx) | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3" × .120 HDG ring shank, 21° stick | PFR2190 framing | all framing face-nailing — rims→joists (4/end), blocking end-nails, posts, plates, infill, girts, plus the roof deck (below). | 2–4 | ~650 | on hand (7/28) | replaces plans' 16d framing; ring beats 16d common on withdrawal; see +1 rule below |
| 2" × .113 HDG ring shank, 21° stick | PFR2190 framing | ¾" floor ply, wall + gable sheathing (15/32") — 6"/12" nailing ( | 2, 4 | ~1,600 | on hand (7/28) | replaces plans’ 6d galv; ring resists squeak. ~700 of this count is the exterior wall sheathing — already owned, nothing to buy |
| 3" × .120 HDG ring shank (same stick as above), roof deck | PFR2190 | 19/32 BCX roof deck, 7 sheets (2 courses per slope, seam on the center rafter): 4" on sheet ends and gable rafters, 6" on intermediate rafters, into rafters only; PSCL panel clips (12) at the course seam | 4 | within the ~650 | on hand | deck edges flush with the future shadow-board faces |
| Loose 16d HDG smooth, 3½" | hand | angle braces → posts & plate, plate-to-post half-laps, visible blind-nail faces, touch-ups | 3 | ~75 | on hand — COUNT THEM BEFORE STARTING | 3½" needed where the gun's 3" runs short in end grain; smooth — 16d HDG ring isn't a retail item |
| #9 × 2½" coated exterior screw, Type-17 auger point | impact driver — toe-driven, no predrill | girts & studs → posts (same screw at stud→plate/deck and at the RO sill, head and jacks) — 2 per end, driven in OPPOSING directions: one angled down through the top edge, one angled up through the bottom edge | 3 | 316 exact — buy 360 (~6 lb) | must buy (~$60) | replaces the earlier "3" structural screw" spec, and does not violate Rule 6 — see the wall-screw note below |
| #8 × 1⅝" ACQ/PT-rated, Torx (star) drive, Type-17 point | impact driver | interior liner → girts & studs; door header (1x4 flat, ¾" stock) — the 2½" would blow through ¾" stock | 3 | ~330 — buy one 5 lb box (~900 pcs) | must buy (~$30) | NEVER drywall screws — hardened, brittle, they snap in shear and corrode on contact with PT. Torx is not vanity: 330 screws at awkward angles with a Phillips means cam-out and stripped heads you cannot back out, which defeats the whole reason for choosing screws — the liner has to stay removable |
| CAMO #8 × 3-1/2″ 316 stainless trim screws, 100-ct (Lowe's 7399147, 2 boxes) | impact driver | cedar fascia + shadow boards (shadow board sits at the top of the fascia, with a drip-edge fold) | 4 | ~200 | on hand (Sep 30 order) | stainless per Rule 2. Replaces the Simpson 10d (3") stainless ring decking nail; the ridge end-nailing and the SCNR discussion are gone with the cedar ridge — rafters now connect via RR-R/A35Z + SD9112. |
| Grip-Rite PrimeGuard Max 2″ 13-ga 304 stainless ring nails (Lowe's 41976, 1 box) | hand, pre-drilled near the ends | cedar collar ties → rafters, 7 per end (14 per tie × 5 ties) | 4 | ~70 | on hand (Sep 30 order) | heads are visible on cedar — Rule 2. The 7-per-end count was derived for this 13-ga nail (D^1.5 scaling), so it holds only for this nail; it replaces the old "do NOT substitute a 13ga siding nail" warning, which was written for the Simpson T6CRD1 6d and is superseded. Pre-drilling replaces the old "blunt the tip" advice |
| Simpson connectors, all fastened with SD9112 #9 × 1-1/2″ connector screws (no hand-nailed connectors; Lowe's SD9112R100, 3 boxes on hand + 1 box Oct 2; need ≈ 276) | impact driver | RR-R ×10 at the interior rafter ridge ends (80 screws); A35Z ×4 at the ridge ends, where the RR-R does not fit (to be bought Oct 2); H2.5AZ ×10 at the interior rafter-to-plate seats (100 screws); A35Z ×4 at the end seats (installed). A35Z total 8 × 12 = 96 screws | 4 | RR-R 10, A35Z 8, H2.5AZ 10 | on hand except 4 A35Z + 1 box SD9112 (Oct 2) | replaces the old hurricane-tie/hanger-nail row; rafters are SYP |
| BHTOP 3/4″ × .120 smooth electro-galvanized 15° coil, 3,600 ct | Freeman G2CN45 | asphalt roof shingles, 6 per shingle (starter, ridge caps, drip edge included) | 4 | ~1,000 | to be ordered or confirmed | 3/4″ chosen so tips stay inside the deck (below the manufacturer's spec, accepted). Scrap test first. Exempt from Rules 1/2 — see the exception there |
| Stainless ring-shank coil roofing nails, 1-1/4″–1-1/2″ (final length open) | Freeman G2CN45 | cedar wall shingles, 2 per shingle | 5 | ~1,500 | later | stainless mandatory on cedar (Rule 2); ≥1-1/4″ per the CSSB single-course minimum. Replaces the 1¾" siding coils / coil siding gun plan |
| 15ga stainless finish, DA-style (2–2½") | PFN1564 finish | all cedar trim — corner boards, window/door casing, 1x5 jamb — + stops | 5 | ~300 | buy w/ Order 3 | stainless on cedar (Rule 2) |
| Loose stainless 8d | hand | last nail at cedar-trim board ends | 5 | ~40 | buy w/ Order 3 | Rule 5 — hand-set ends so cedar doesn't split |
| 18ga stainless brads (to 1¼") | PBR32Q brad | sash-lite stops | 5 | ~100 | buy w/ Order 3 | into painted pine but stainless anyway (next to cedar/glass) |
| 1" plastic caps + 3/8" staples (Stinger StaplePac 135715) | Stinger CH38-2 cap stapler | ProArmor roof underlayment; #30 wall felt (cap-stapled, no seam tape) | 4, 5 | 1 StaplePac + leftover | on hand (Sep 30 order) | |

| Exterior-rated screws (1⅝" + structural) | impact driver | doors (Appendix B = screws + glue), hinges, latches, all hardware | 5 | ~150 | buy w/ Order 3 | upgrade plans' drywall screws to exterior-rated |
| Loose 6d HDG | hand | pine stops (painted), toenail touch-ups | 5 / any | ~50 | small box | pine stops don't need stainless (painted, no tannin) |
| FastenMaster TimberLok 6"/8" structural screws | impact driver | 4x6 timber-wall corner ties | pre-1 (edging) | ~20 | on hand | support/retaining wall, not the shed frame — for completeness |
+1 rule: the 3" gun nail carries ~⅓ less shear than a true 16d common (3½" × .162), so drive one extra wherever the plans give a 16d count at a primary joint — rims→joists become 4 per end, not 3.
WALL SCREWS — decided Aug 23, 2026. Why 2½" and not 3": toe-driven at about 30° starting 1" back from the girt’s end, the screw spends 1"/cos 30° = 1.15" crossing the girt, so a 2½" screw lands 1.35" into the post. NDS wants 6D minimum, which for a #9 at 0.177" is 1.06" — it clears by 27%. The 10D figure (1.77") applies to connections carrying design load, and these carry none. 2½" also runs ~62 per pound against ~47, and drives with less torque and less splitting in dense PT.
Why two per end — not for load, for ROTATION. One screw lets the girt pivot around it; two driven parallel from the same face still let it pull straight off. One angled down through the top edge and one angled up through the bottom edge locks both directions. Exception — the girt row at the deck: with only ½" of clearance underneath there is no getting a driver on the bottom edge, so those ends take both screws from the top edge, splayed left and right instead.
Screws, not 16d toenails — and Rule 6 is not violated. Rule 6 governs gun versus hammer, not nail versus screw. Screws win because the frame is standing, plumbed and braced and hammering moves it — that is exactly what put 3/8" of rack into the plate box — and because a 16d driven 1½" from the end of a piece ripped to 2¾" will split it. This replaces the earlier "3" structural screw" spec. Full derivation in Wall_Framing.html.
LINER SCREWS — holding values worth recording. A #8 into the liner alone is 53 lb of thread withdrawal but only 45 lb of head pull-through, which governs. Through the liner and 1½" into a girt it is 212 lb. Formula: W = 2850 × G² × D per inch of penetration — liner G≈0.50, girt G≈0.55, #8 at D=0.164". These are NDS solid-lumber formulas applied to plywood, so trust the ratios and keep margin on the absolutes.
Rule for hanging things later: divide how far it sticks out by how far apart your screws are. If that number is greater than 1, the pull on the top screw exceeds the weight of the object and you must be in a girt.
Keep on hand regardless: hand-drive 16d HDG smooth 3½″ — now the fastener for ALL toenailing on this build (Rule 6): ~200–250 total, so 4–5 lb, not the 1½ lb originally scheduled — plus one small box of 6d HDG for touch-ups and wherever the gun doesn't fit.
Ranked by cost of getting them wrong.
| Where | Why | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Fascia + shadow board | Most visible trim; gun heads mar cedar; stainless per Rule 2 (cedar) | CAMO #8 × 3-1/2″ 316 stainless screws, impact driver ( |
| Cedar collar ties | Visible heads on cedar; split risk near ends | Grip-Rite 2″ 13-ga SS ring nails, 7 per end, pre-drilled, hand-driven |
| ALL toenailing, anywhere on the build | Gun skates and under-drives at 45°; 16d is 57% stronger | Hand — 16d HDG smooth |
| Post blind-nailing at deck corners | Visible faces, precision placement | Hand |
| Within reach of salvaged sash / glass | One hammer slip vs one gun recoil — both bad, gun worse | 15ga stainless finish gun at low pressure, or hand with care |
| Doors, hinges, all hardware | Screws by design (adjustability, slam-cycles) | Impact driver, exterior screws |
| Roof connectors (RR-R, A35Z, H2.5AZ) | Simpson-specified screws; no hand-nailed connectors | Impact driver, SD9112 |
| Last nail at any cedar/pine board end | Split risk | Hand, blunted tip |
